Hystyria

October 9th - 10th

In rural, isolated 1820s Styria, nineteen year old Laura Kingswell wakes to find a woman—or an angel?—looming at the foot of her bed. She is told it was only a dream. A defect. A feminine affliction. But when her dream becomes flesh and the strange woman takes up residence in the home, cracks in the household's carefully ordered foundation begin to rupture wide open. And so does Laura.

Hystyria is a contemporary, physical, and female-centric reframing of the 1872 novella Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. It premiered in New York City in association with the New York Theater Festival for three performances in January & February 2026. Prior to the festival, the show was initially student workshopped at Long Island University Post's Lab Theatre.
